Once Upon a Time in Harlem is a 2026 American documentary conceived and filmed by pioneering Black filmmaker William Greaves and directed by his son, David Greaves. The film is a three-generation family effort — shot by William in 1972, restored and completed by David, and produced by David’s daughter Liani — that won the $200,000 Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film. Those searching for once upon a time in harlem 2026 full movie will discover a vital piece of cultural history.
The documentary centers on a remarkable four-hour reunion that William Greaves engineered inside Duke Ellington’s New York townhouse in 1972. Gathering the surviving luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance — painter Aaron Douglas, collage artist Romare Bearden, poet and novelist Arna Bontemps, composer Eubie Blake, photographer James Van Der Zee, novelist Richard Bruce Nugent, actor Leigh Whipper, Countee Cullen’s widow Ida Mae Cullen, and many more — Greaves’ 16mm cameras captured them reminiscing, arguing, laughing, and wrestling with their place in a rapidly changing culture. Many had not seen each other in fifty years.
Premiering at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and released theatrically by NEON, the 100-minute film is both an intimate family portrait and a living archive of one of the most important cultural movements in American history. Like once upon a time in harlem 2026 full movie, the best documentaries preserve stories that might otherwise be lost.
