Whalefall 2026 full movie is a harrowing survival thriller directed by Brian Duffield, adapted from Daniel Kraus’s acclaimed 2023 novel of the same name. Released in theaters on October 16, 2026, the film stars Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, a young scuba diver who sets out to retrieve the remains of his recently deceased father off the coast of California — and ends up swallowed whole by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale. With visual effects from Industrial Light & Magic and practical creature work from Weta Workshop, it is one of the most ambitious survival films in years.
The cast is led by Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin, who plays Jay’s father Mitt, with supporting turns from Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. Duffield, who previously helmed the wordless alien-invasion thriller No One Will Save You, co-wrote the screenplay with Kraus, keeping the story’s claustrophobic intensity firmly on Jay’s desperate race against time. Trapped inside the whale’s belly with roughly an hour of oxygen left, Jay must find a reason to survive and devise an unthinkable escape.
Beyond its white-knuckle premise, Whalefall is an emotional story about grief, guilt, and a fractured father-son bond. As Jay struggles through the whale’s digestive system, he comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted over the years may hold the key to his survival. Director Duffield has described the film as “the opposite of Jaws” — the whale is not a monster but a magnificent, indifferent force of nature — and critics have praised its immersive sound design, claustrophobic tension, and earnest emotional core.
